Egypt transfers tons of building materials to Gaza

EL-ARISH, Egypt (AP) ? Thousands of tons of building materials such as cement and steel began crossing into the Gaza Strip on Saturday, Egyptian and Palestinian officials said, temporarily easing a five year old blockade on the coastal territory.

An Egyptian security official said shipment was made in consultation with Israeli officials, who were in Cairo Thursday to discuss security in the Sinai Peninsula and the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire agreed upon by Gaza's Hamas rulers and Israel last month. The Egyptian official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The director of Gaza's border authority, Maher Abu Sabha, confirmed to The Associated Press that a total of 20 trucks carrying materials were expected to arrive in the coastal strip Saturday through the Rafah border crossing.

Qatar is paying for the raw materials that were bought in Egypt, the official added.

The tiny oil-rich Gulf country has pledged 24 projects worth some $425 million in the Gaza Strip to improve crumbling housing, schools, a hospital and roads.

Under former President Hosni Mubarak, Israel's longtime ally, Egypt had poor relations with Hamas, and teamed up with Israel to blockade Gaza after the militant group seized power from its rival Fatah in 2007, two years after winning elections.

While Israel has eased the blockade in recent years, key restrictions remain in place on exports out of Gaza and the entry of badly needed building materials and other goods into the territory.

New Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, of Hamas' parent group the Muslim Brotherhood, has vowed not to abandon the Palestinians. Unlike Mubarak in late 2008, Morsi kept the border crossing with the Gaza Strip open for movement of people and humanitarian supplies during Israel's latest offensive in November. Gaza has yet to fully recover from the two offensives, which left buildings, homes and schools in rubble.

Morsi reiterated in a nationwide speech Saturday that the Palestinian issue is important to Egyptians.

Since the blockade was first imposed, an extensive network of tunnels between Egypt and Gaza have been ferrying everything from cars to food to essential household items to Palestinians.

While Egypt has launched periodic crackdowns on the tunnels, its security forces generally ignore the movement of construction materials, fuel and consumer goods through what Palestinians consider an underground lifeline.

Perodua to build new RM790m plant in Rawang, adding 100,000 ...

December is a quiet month for the auto industry, for obvious reasons, so we didn?t see this coming. Instead of holidaying, the management of Perodua and Daihatsu held a media briefing this morning, revealing huge plans for the Rawang-based carmaker. Perodua will invest RM790 million to set up a new company and a new manufacturing plant adjacent to its existing factory in Sungai Choh, north of Rawang.

The new 65,000 square metre facility and its holding company (same shareholder ratio as now) will create 1,200 new jobs and add 100,000 units to Perodua?s annual production capacity, which now stands at 200k with a two-shift cycle. The 100k figure is based on a single shift, so full capacity should be even higher. Mass production is scheduled to start in mid-2014.

Perodua managing director Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said that the new plant will be ?world class? and have the same hardware, systems and processes as Daihatsu?s factory in Japan. While the ?new plant and old plant will complement each other,? the reason Perodua is building a new plant is because it?s easier to build a top level plant from scratch than upgrading a 19-year old one to meet the best standards.

?We want to jump start immediately, start from day one on a global level,? Aminar said. ?This new company will be a role model for our existing manufacturing plant. It will have improved systems, new tech, more automation and is environmentally friendly,? he added.

The new plant will feature, among other things, increased automated welding (full automation for under and main body), automatic body accuracy measurement, the latest 3-Wet Waterborne Paint, enhanced dustproofing for the paint shop and a brighter/quieter working environment.

Besides adding more capacity, the new plant is part of a structural transformation process Perodua is undergoing to better face market liberalisation post-2016. The new culture and practices from the new company/plant and will be implemented on the current plant via a process Daihatsu calls Yokoten.

We?re some years away from 2016, but Perodua admits that it is already feeling the heat ? recent arrivals like the Mitsubishi Mirage and Nissan Almera (the latter sparking a price war of sorts) are encroaching into a price territory previously exclusive to national makes. Price aside, the new entries tout fuel efficiency as a selling point, and FC is one of the main reasons why Perodua is where it is today.

Faced with this, Perodua wants to reduce costs and improve quality to stay in the game. ?We have to do something about it, and we have to do it quickly ? it?s do or die for us. We cannot afford to be juara kampung,? Aminar declared. For readers outside of Malaysia, juara kampung can be translated to ?village champion.? Think of a big fish in a small pond.

?This new plant is part of our five-year strategic roadmap to stay competitive in the ever liberalising automotive industry by helping us be more productive and efficient, while at the same time reducing cost,? he added.

An extra 100,000 units per year sounds like a big jump, and it is ? with exports expected to account for only 20,000 units of total volume by 2015, some on the floor were scratching heads, wondering where all those extra cars will go.

Aminar replied that Perodua is only trying to protect is market leading share of 28% to 30%, and the big volume corresponds with projected total industry volume (TIV), which is expected to grow from the current figure of around 600,000.

CEO of Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) Mohamad Madani Sahari was at the event, and he told us that projected TIV for Malaysia is 750,000 units for 2015. You do the math.

With this announcement, Perodua is definitely ending the year with a bang. Some might have expected Daihatsu, which is big in Indonesia, to focus on our fast-growing neighbour as its base for ASEAN growth, but DMC has described Malaysia as a ?key base for its overseas business.?

Will Congress have a New Year?s Eve cliff countdown?

The official countdown clock for the fiscal cliff starts on Thursday, and a big question will be if Congress will be in session next Monday night.

Obama_Boehner_State_of_the_Union_2011President Barack Obama and Senate Democrats are set to resume work on fiscal cliff talks on Thursday, assuming the president?s return from Hawaii isn?t delayed by bad weather.

That leaves the Democrats and Republicans with five days to agree on a fiscal cliff compromise, get the bills written for such measures, and hold two high-profile public votes.

Outgoing Senator Joe Lieberman seemingly joked on Sunday that the fiscal cliff vote could come as gigantic crowds amass on New Year?s Eve to celebrate the holiday.

?We?re going to spend New Year?s Eve here, I believe,? he told CNN.
But on further review, maybe Lieberman wasn?t joking after all.

The assumption going into Thursday was that President Barack Obama and Senate majority leader Harry Reid would agree on some type of stop-gap measure to delay middle-class tax hikes and hold off some spending cuts.

The temporary measure would have to get passed by the GOP-controlled House and Democrat-controlled Senate in near-record time, and it still wouldn?t fix the long-term problems that are part of the fiscal cliff debate.

On Sunday, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison said she expected any action in the waning days of the year to be ?a patch because in four days we can?t solve everything.?

Even getting a stop-gap measure through the Senate will be tricky, since its GOP leadership will need to forgo a filibuster to get a bill passed.

Then, the divided Republican House would need to agree on a measure proposed by Democrats. Last week, GOP House members couldn?t agree on a bill offered by its own leader, John Boehner.

There were reportedly no talks between the sides during the Christmas holiday break, so negotiations won?t start until Thursday.

One rumored stop-gap package would be a delay on taxing households with income under $250,000, an extension of unemployment benefits, a patch to the alternative minimum tax and a delay to spending cuts known as the sequester.

However, there was growing pessimism the Democrats could get any Republican support in the House unless a stop-gap measure include a delayed tax hike for all households and cuts to social programs.

But the Republicans also have to deal with some less-than-favorable factors.

For starters, there will be fewer GOP members in the House and Senate after the New Year, as a new crop of Congress members takes office. And public opinion polls show most Americans will blame GOP leadership if the fiscal cliff becomes a reality.

Making matters more complex is the theory that some Republicans want the steep tax hikes and spending cuts that make up the fiscal cliff to kick in?at least for a few days.

The House could then vote for a compromise measure that would, technically, lower taxes after the Bush-era tax cuts expire. Such a measure would give GOP House members some ?cover? in two years when they come up for re-election.

The one factor that could force a stop-gap package before New Year?s Day is a very, very bad reaction from Wall Street.

So far, investors are watching and waiting to see what happens by the weekend.

In a New York Times article, Julia Coronado, the chief North American economist at BNP Paribas, was pessimistic. ?Markets have been incredibly complacent about this,? she said. And investors won?t be happy if the fiscal cliff happens. ?The markets will take that hard.?

However, that isn?t a consensus opinion. Some market watchers believe fiscal cliff scenarios have been priced into the market already, while others are expecting negotiations to finalize in January, before much damage happens.

Historically, market trading is light on December 31, but next Monday could be an interesting day, especially if talks fall apart on the weekend.

A bad day on Wall Street could lead to a late night in Washington.

The problem is that after the snow last week the auto start stopped working. You can hear the car cranking but it does not go through. However, manually starting the car works. Any ideas that I should check first before bringing it to a shop? It worked fine before the snow(cold temp) we had last week.

Or maybe tach sensing needs to be programmed. All depends on how it was installed and/or how it was set up. What kind of car is it?
