Rose Parade wonders of a century ago - with post-parade ostrich, elephant and camel races

The special 1913 Rose Parade edition of the Pasadena Daily News featured a rose-covered glamour girl on the cover, and portraits of the parade's queen - and king, as decreed by President Edward T. Off to reign over the event. (HAND-IN)

A hundred years ago there was a Tournament of Roses parade just as there will be this week.

The Pasadena Daily News published a special edition about the parade and it also printed articles on the many wonders of Pasadena.

Edward T. Off was president of the Tournament of Roses Association and wrote of its history.

He said, "Commercialism has never been permitted to enter our floral parade. No painted signs or sordid suggestion of any kind encroaches to mar the beautiful effect."

President Off decreed in 1913 that both a king and queen should reign over the event.

Harrison I. Drummond and Miss Jean P. French were named.

The judges awarded a special prize to Adolphus Busch for the best horse-drawn vehicle in the parade. The Komical Knights of the Karnival won first prize for a two-horse vehicle.

The prize for gasoline powered automobiles carrying four or more went to the Hotel Green. The Keystone Film Company, known for Keystone Comedies, came in second.

Emma H. Diers got first prize for electric vehicles.

The Association had made enough money to buy the 21-acre area that became known as Tournament Park.

After the parade, chariot races were held at Tournament Park before 50,000 people. Jo Hendrickson, in his history of the Tournament, says that memorable in 1913 were ostrich races and an elephant-camel race.

He says one ostrich threw the rider off and the elephant had to be

prodded to finish.

Articles in the special Pasadena Daily News edition included "Dreams and Visions" by Rev. Robert J. Burdette, "Game and Fish in Southern California" by Joe Welsh, "Pasadena Thirty Years Ago" by J. W. Wood, "Church Life in Pasadena" by Rev. Robert Freeman, D.D., "Pasadena a Floral Bower" by P.D. Barnhart, "Mid-Winter Outdoor Life in Pasadena" by Dr. Garrett Newkirk, "Beautiful Homes of Pasadena," by Isabel Bates Winslow and "How Pasadena in Governed" by Mayor William H. Thum.

There was an article on the Pasadena Polo Club that played at Tournament Park. Another on "Arroyo Seco Natural Park - An Inspiration to the Artists."

Tournament Park at Wilson Avenue and California Boulevard now mostly belongs to Caltech.

The very purpose of spirituality is self-discipline. Rather than ...

Criticizing others, or criticizing yourself. One will get you results, the other just annoys people.

Criticize others, or criticize yourself. One will get you results, the other just annoys people. Be constructive in your self-criticism, and then do something about it.

What does that mean?
Recently, I was riding in a car when the driver criticized the driver we were following for their driving style. To me, that was exactly what this quote was about.

They were criticising others for something they didn?t even know they did, and did so in their absence. Without them being present, there would be no way of them understanding what had happened, or altering their behavior.

Instead, the quote urges us to evaluate what we could do to better adapt to the situation, and criticize ourselves and our behaviors. It is implied, at least in my mind, that after we criticize ourselves, we then do something about it, and act to remedy our deficiencies.

Why is fixing ourselves first important???
To me, this quote is mostly about developing the self-discipline necessary to be able to improve ourselves. Lacking that level of self-discipline, we cannot push ourselves to do the work necessary to get better at much of anything. And that?s not much of a life, is it?

It is easy enough to criticize others, for some reason, that just comes natural to most of us. However it is usually much more difficult to even notice a defect, much less criticize it, when we are dealing with ourselves. Again, that just doesn?t seem to be the way it works.

However, with some effort, we can turn the focus to ourselves as the first place to examine when something isn?t quite right. As we are the only person whom we can actually make change. If we can remember that fact, we can more easily make the change.

Where can I apply this in my life?
What are some of the things which others do which annoy you to the point of criticizing others? That might be a clue that there is something you could try to change in yourself. Can you take a moment and consider what rule of yours that they are breaking?

Once you know what the rule is that they are breaking (or bending), you can try to determine where that rule comes from, and if it still serves you. Is it something you learned as a child, but isn?t useful anymore? Is it a rule you learned from your parents or a teacher, which is no longer useful?

Is it something unrealistic in this day and age? Is it even proper, given the change in societal standards over the past few decades? Are you tilting at windmills, or otherwise behaving in an anachronistic manner? Perhaps you could change just a little bit, right?

In the case of the driver mentioned above, they have a certain set of habits that the other driver didn?t know, and wasn?t likely to have developed on their own. Without any communication of common ground rules, there was little chance that the other person would do what was expected.

This would be a prime case for changing our rules for just a little while, so as not to get angry or frustrated with the other driver, right? Then everyone can arrive happy and relaxed, not angry and frustrated. How much of a change do you think it would take to accommodate the quirks of the other person?

Grab some paper and write down a few of the things that annoy you. Once you have a couple of them listed, try to figure out what is the rule that people are breaking that causes each of the annoyances. Now write down what some of the reasons why you have those rules.

Pick one of the items on your list where you want to make a change. The first thing to determine is if this is a life-long change, or just a rule you need to relax for a while under certain circumstances. For a life-long change you?ll need to completely dismantle the rule, as well as replacing all the old reasons with new reasons which support the new rule.

If all you have to do is put up with someone?s quirks for the duration of a trip, a holiday gathering, or a weekend away, all you need to do is come up with reasons to temporarily relax your rule until things are more or less back to normal for you.

Either way, you will have to spend some time carefully examining your life and your reasons for being the way you are. ?I?ve always been that way.? may be a good excuse, but it is not a reason. Until you can find the beliefs and examples that support your rules, you will forever be subject to them.

Whether you believe in spirituality or not, I believe the very basis of civilization is self-discipline. Without it, society and even families break down rapidly. When this is combined with the realization that we cannot force others to change, we can come to realize the power of this quote. I hope you chose to live it, as I am trying to do.

Fiscal deal stalls as clock ticks to deadline

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Efforts to prevent the economy from tumbling over a "fiscal cliff" stalled on Sunday as Democrats and Republicans remained at loggerheads over a deal that would prevent taxes for all Americans from rising on New Year's Day.

One hour before they had hoped to present a plan, Democratic and Republican Senate leaders said they were still unable to reach a compromise that would stop the automatic tax hikes and spending cuts that could push the U.S. economy back into recession.

"There are still serious differences between the two sides," said Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid.

Progress still appeared possible after the two sides narrowed their differences on tax increases and Republicans indicated they would withdraw a contentious proposal to slow the growth of Social Security retirement benefits.

Failure to secure a deal would deliver a heavy blow to the U.S. economy just as it is showing signs of a quicker recovery. Planned tax increases and spending cuts would suck $600 billion out of the economy and again force up unemployment, which had shown signs of improving.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell talked several times to Vice President Joe Biden by phone in the hope of breaking the standstill. "I'm willing to get this done, but I need a dance partner," McConnell said.

Any agreement needs to be rushed through both chambers of Congress before midnight on Monday. But, even if the two sides reach a deal, procedural barriers in the Senate and the House of Representatives make quick action difficult.

Buoyed by his re-election in November, President Barack Obama has insisted that any deal must include a tax increase on the wealthiest Americans, who have seen their earnings rise steadily over the past decade at a time when income has stalled for the less affluent.

Many conservative Republicans in the House of Representatives oppose a tax hike on anyone, no matter how wealthy.

The two sides were close to agreeing to raise taxes on households earning around $400,000 or $500,000 a year - higher than Obama's preferred threshold of $250,000 - several senators told reporters.

Republicans aim to pair any tax increase with government spending cuts to benefit programs that are projected to grow ever more expensive as the population ages in coming decades.

But their proposal to slow the growth of Social Security benefits by changing the way they are measured against inflation met fierce resistance from Democrats. Obama included the proposal, known as "chained CPI," in an earlier proposal, but many of his fellow Democrats remain opposed.

'POISON PILL'

"We consider it a poison pill - they know we can't accept it. It is a big step back from where we were on Friday," a Senate Democratic aide said.

Several Senate Republicans said they would support taking that idea out of the discussion. "Most of us agree the chained CPI is off the table in these negotiations," Senator John McCain said on Twitter.

In a rare appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press," Obama pressured lawmakers to reach a deal.

"If people start seeing that on January 1st this problem still hasn't been solved... then obviously that's going to have an adverse reaction in the markets," he said, adding that he had offered Republicans significant compromises that had been rejected repeatedly.

Obama said he would try to reverse the tax hikes for most Americans if Congress fails to act.

John Boehner, the House speaker, rejected Obama's accusations that Republicans were not being amenable to compromise.

"The president's comments today are ironic, as a recurring theme of our negotiations was his unwillingness to agree to anything that would require him to stand up to his own party," he said in a statement. Some Type 2 Diabetes Remissions Possible With Exercise, Diet ...

From Your Health Journal?..?As many of you know, I raise money for diabetes awareness if I can ? and have a link on one of my web sites to assist with donations. The CDC came out with a new report that states one out of nine type 2s who followed an intensive diet and exercise program for one year were able to record normal or prediabetes-level blood sugar levels. Yes, this is something we already know, since type 2 diabetes is environmental, and many times, associated with obesity. So, eating right and getting some daily physical activity can potentially lower someones weight and help a type 2 diabetic have normal blood sugar levels. Researchers noted that patients most likely to achieve remission of diabetes-level blood sugar measurements had been diagnosed with type 2 for fewer years, and lost more weight and achieved greater fitness during the course of the study than their peers. Please visit the Diabetes Health web site for the full story (link below) ? as well as learning more about diabetes, it is a fantastic site.?

From the article?..

One out of nine type 2s who followed an intensive diet and exercise program for one year were able to record normal or prediabetes-level blood sugar levels, according to a study recently released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In the multi-year study, which has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 11.5 percent?roughly one in nine?of the type 2 patients who followed a rigorous diet and exercise routine were able to drop their blood sugar levels below the diabetes threshold of 126 mg/dL without the use of medication. This compared to 2 percent of patients in a non-diet, non-exercise control group who were able to achieve the same result.

The diet called for a daily intake of 1,200 to 1,800 calories, including beverages, and physical activity adding up to just under three hours per week.

Researchers noted that patients most likely to achieve remission of diabetes-level blood sugar measurements had been diagnosed with type 2 for fewer years, and lost more weight and achieved greater fitness during the course of the study than their peers.
