Northeast Portland house fire displaces family, kills two pets ...

A family was displaced from their home and lost their dog and rabbit after a fire Saturday morning broke out in their Northeast Portland home.

Portland Fire & Rescue officials don?t know yet what caused the fire at 3730 N.E. 112th Ave., but estimate it did $60,000 in damage.

Crews responded at 11:37 a.m. to the fire and arrived at the scene to find smoke coming from the basement and first floor of the house. After quickly extinguishing the blaze, firefighters did a search of the house and found a miniature doberman pinscher and rabbit in the basement where the fire broke out. The pets were ?overcome with smoke,? according to a release, and efforts to resuscitate the dog using an animal CPR kit were unsuccessful.

The Red Cross is helping the family with housing, food, clothing and mental health services. Volunteers from the Trauma Intervention Program, a national nonprofit, were also called in.
