My team building nightmare | Kid Billy Music

This is kind of embarrassing but that?s never stopped me from telling a story before! I had a team building nightmare. In my dream, before I woke up in a cold sweat, one of my competitors was chasing me up a mountain trail accompanied by three goons wielding huge knives. It was quite real and woke me up with a start. The embarrassing part is that I?m actually dreaming about team building? But the next morning, as I told my wife about the nightmare, I began to think it?s kind of cool that I care so much about this business that it?s creeping into my dreams. I?ve never been accused of doing things half-way and I?m willing to make mistakes with the same enthusiasm of my successes. And this is part of the creative process ? getting messy, making mistakes on the road to creating better services, better products, and hopefully better dreams!

It?s not just what you know ? It?s how you feel about it?

Passion is a powerful tool. Whether it?s the passion that gives us nightmares, or the good passion that fuels our strategic plans for 2013, consider it a gift to be energized and engaged. With all the take-aways we offer with our program, Team Building Through Song, I?m happy to go out on a limb and state here that our most important contribution to your team dynamics will be the heightened engagement, energy and passion we?ll leave you with.

Speaking of passion?

?I just have to share this testimonial letter. ALTOUR invited us to join their annual meeting at the Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel the first week of January. I hated to have to start the year on the California coast, ha ha! But seriously, it was an honor to work with this Travel, Meetings and Incentive company for their internal meeting.

Botswana growth to slow on dull diamond demand

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Falling demand for diamonds will dampen economic growth in Botswana, the world's biggest producer of the precious stone, but new mining investments in neighbouring Namibia will bolster output there, a Reuters poll has found.

Diamond output, which accounts for about a third of Botswana's GDP, probably fell to 19.9 million carats last year from 22.8 million in 2011, partially state-owned diamond company Debswana said in November, citing a weak global market.

"Debswana is likely to cut production further in the event of further external deterioration, weighing on mining-sector growth," said Razia Khan, head of Standard Chartered Africa research.

"However, non-mining GDP should perform better, supported by strong credit growth, although this is unlikely to fully offset the impact of more subdued government development expenditure."

The poll's median forecast predicted Botswana's economy would grow 4.5 percent this year, unchanged from a median forecast in November, but weaker than the estimated 5.0 percent expansion in 2012. It would then pick up to 4.9 percent next year.

That is far better than the 2.6 percent growth that South Africa promises to deliver this year as weak domestic demand limits the expansion of Africa's biggest economy.

Mineral-rich neighbour Namibia's economy is expected to grow 4.4 percent this year and 4.6 percent next, just up on an estimated 4.3 percent in 2012 as new mining projects boost employment and lift consumer spending.

The country's central bank last month cut its own forecasts for growth to 4.6 and 4.3 percent respectively for 2012 and 2013.

MINERAL ARRAY

Namibia, one of the world's top uranium producers, also mines an array of other minerals such as gem diamonds, gold, silver and base metals.

Rio Tinto's Rossing mine and Australian miner Paladin Energy are two of the top operating producers.

But other companies such as China's Guangdong Nuclear Power Corp (CGNPC) are developing mines that are expected to boost output in the near term.

CGNPC gained control of the Husab mine in southern Africa last year as commodity-hungry China has been ramping up efforts to meet its growing energy needs.

"Crucially, we see the economy benefiting from the construction phase of the Husab uranium mine," said Daniel Motinga, analyst at Rand Merchant Bank.

"The project will employ between 4,000 and 6,000 people during the construction phase, which augurs well for the retail and trading sectors."

Despite the boost to consumer spending, Namibia's inflation rate is seen moderating from 6.0 percent this year to 5.7 percent next.

Inflation in Botswana is also seen falling, though still holding above the central bank's 3-6 percent target range, averaging 7.0 percent this year and 6.2 percent in 2013.

Botswana's pula is pegged to South Africa's rand, which has shed over 11 percent against the dollar since the start of 2012 and any further rand weakness could send inflation higher.

Is creatine going to improve your training results?

Occasionally someone asks my personal trainers?about supplements, specifically protein and creatine.

Today I write ?about creatine. Research over the last couple of years has come to the conclusion that creatine is a supplement that can help you with your training performance, given that the training has a high intensity and short duration (15-30s). Especially people
who have a low baseline of phosphocreatine, like vegetarians seem to profit from the supplement but even in non-vegetarians the strength and performance increases have been significant.

?

Creatine Supplementation

Here are a couple of ?effects of creatine supplementation:

  • significantly increased muscle mass after strength training regimen
  • significantly increased strength, although not with 1 RM activities.
  • a chronic supplementation of creatine seems to protect against traumatic brain injury (study was done on mice, so not sure how much that relates to humans)
  • it does not seem to have a positive effect on endurance sports with exception of the sprint/spurt phase of that particular sport
  • creatine-dextrose and protein-dextrose combinations create similar strength gains
  • potential decrease in mental fatigue
  • negative effects can be, diarrhea, cramping, increased water retention
  • in people with renal dysfunction creatine supplementation can progress the disease.
  • Creatine could potentially exacerbate allergic lung inflammation and airway remodeling in mice. Again the question is how far does that relate to humans but I am sure I would not recommend anyone with lung issues to take creatine.
  • there seem to be no long-term ill effects of creatine supplementation in healthy athletes

Administering creatine supplementation

The studies I have looked at seemed inconclusive but it seems that there is a loading phase of about 4x 4-5g/day for 2-4 days and then a consistent loading of 2.5-6 g/day from there on. Some articles recommend that the daily dose for recreational athletes should not exceed the natural phosphocreatine turnover of 2.5-3g/day. Healthy athletes that submit daily to high intensity strength- or sprint training should have a maximum dose of 5-6g/day for less than 2 weeks according to the article. Newer research suggests that taking 15.75g/day for 5 days and 5-10g/day thereafter has no negative effects on healthy athletes over the course of 21 months.

Conclusion

I am a personal trainer not a dietitian and as such not allowed to tell you what you should or should not do. But personally I feel that ta

?

king creatine is safe if you are healthy and I do not object to my clients taking it. Most athletes I would wager would benefit from cleaning up their diet first before going for supplements. Once that baseline is established I feel that protein and creatine supplementation can be useful tools for improving your performance and results. Endurance athletes, especially ultra-endurance athletes do not benefit from creatine supplementation since spurts and sprints are not that important and the additional water weight might be detrimental overall.

I personally would go with a loading phase of 15 g per day for 4 days and then a low dose of 4-5g/day. That is my personal opinion though.

Yours,

Michael Anders

The Rio Grande do Sul state forensics department raised the death toll Tuesday from 231 to 234 to account for three victims who did not appear on the original list of the dead. Authorities say more than 120 people remain hospitalized for smoke inhalation and burns, with dozens of them in critical condition, after the Sunday nightclub fire. (AP Photo/Felipe Dana)

A fast-moving fire roared through the crowded, windowless nightclub, early Sunday, killing more than 230 people. The first funeral services were held Monday for the victims. Most of the dead were college students 18 to 21 years old, but they also included some minors. Almost all died from smoke inhalation. (AP Photo/Felipe Dana)

(AP) ? Flammable and toxic foam soundproofing on the ceiling. Just one exit for a club that could hold hundreds of people. Not a ceiling water sprinkler system in sight.

These are some of the main causes of the massive death toll in a nightclub fire in Brazil. And none broke any law, raising questions about safety regulations in a nation set to host the World Cup and Olympic Games.

Documents obtained by The Associated Press, including past building and fire safety plan permits issued to the Kiss club, where more than 230 people died within minutes in a fire early Sunday, showed that such deadly choices were within regulations.

"Do I agree with the fact that there was only one exit? No. Do I agree that the roof was covered with flammable material? No, I don't," said Maj. Gerson Pereira, an inspector with the local fire department. "I would have liked to shut down this place, but then the firefighters could be sued" because no law had been broken.

But the same documents also illustrate that other regulations were broken, including irregularities in the fire safety inspection of the club, as well as violations by the band the club hired whose pyrotechnics are blamed for causing the blaze. Police inspectors say any of these violations were reason enough to shut the club down.

One document shows that the club had already been labeled by fire officials as being at "medium" risk for having a fire. By state law, that designation requires that the club undergo annual inspections. But records show that the last inspection took place in August 2011.

Survivors of the fire have said that the club's fire extinguishers failed to work in early attempts to battle the blaze. Under state law, an extinguisher must have a receipt showing that it had been independently inspected within a year in order for it to be acceptable.

Marcelo Arigony, the lead police investigator in the case, said in a Tuesday press conference that it was clear the fire extinguishers had not been inspected and that they were clearly cheap models that should not be used anywhere.

Perhaps most egregious was what authorities point to as the cause of the fire, whose death toll rose to 235 when a young man died of burn injuries late Tuesday.

The blaze began at around 2:30 a.m. local time during a performance by Gurizada Fandangueira, a country music band that had made the use of pyrotechnics a trademark of their shows. The band's guitarist told media that the 615-square-meter (6,650-square-foot) club was packed with an estimated 1,200 to 1,300 people, the same estimate police have given. Capacity for the club, however, is under 700.

Police said that members of the band knowingly bought flares meant for outdoor use because they cost a mere $1.25 a piece, compared with the $35 price tag for an indoor flare.

"It's not that this club was working to come within this or that law ? the place should have never been open in the first place," Arigony said. "This is a problem that is seen across Brazil, these laws. I can only hope this tragedy brings about change."

Jaime Moncada, a U.S.-based fire-safety consultant with nearly three decades experience in Latin America including large projects in Brazil, said he was not surprised that one exit was permissible under local law.

Shown a blueprint of the club obtained by the AP, he calculated that the farthest point from the front door was 105 feet (32 meters), and regulations in most Brazilian states dictate that a second exit is required only if the distance is 131 feet (40 meters) or more.

For the same reason of distance, Moncada said sprinklers and alarms would not be required.

"For an American audience, it is crazy to think that a place would have only one exit," he said.

In Brazil, he added, that would be the norm.

In the United States, the club would have failed an inspection in at least three ways, according to Moncada: Three separate exits would have been required; the foam would need to be treated with a fire retardant; and it would need sprinklers.

Brazil is the globe's fifth-largest economy by some measures, but it lags far behind others in terms of fire safety standards, according to several fire-safety experts with experience here.

One reason: State laws are written by fire-fighting officials who do not seek input from engineers specializing in areas such as fire dynamics, how flames affect different materials and computer models that can devise the best evacuation procedures, according to Rodrigo Machado Tavares, an engineer and fire-safety consultant based in Sao Paulo.

What's more, state, city and expert groups can offer conflicting suggestions.

In Sao Paulo ? where a series of large fires in the 1970s prompted an early round of safety regulations that became a model nationally ? there are three ways to calculate how wide a staircase needs to be for safe evacuation, Tavares said.

"You'll get three different numbers; it's very confusing," he said.

And enforcement often is lacking. In academic research, Tavares found that in the northeastern port city of Recife, most buildings do not have the required fire alarms. It's the same in much of Brazil, he said.

Amid the shock of what was the world's deadliest nightclub fire in a decade, changes in Brazil seemed on the horizon.

In Brasilia, the nation's capital, lawmakers in the lower house worked on a proposal that would require federal safety minimum standards across Brazil. Now states individually create such laws. The O Globo newspaper reported on its website that the mayor's office in Santa Maria ordered all nightclubs closed for 30 days while inspections are carried out.

Elsewhere, the government of the country's biggest city, Sao Paulo, set to host the opening match of the 2014 World Cup, promised tougher security regulations for nightclubs.

The Folha de S. Paulo newspaper reported that in Manaus, which will also host World Cup matches, nightclubs with empty fire extinguishers and unmarked emergency exits have been shut down and fined. And in Olympic host city, Rio de Janeiro, a consumer complaint hotline has received more than 60 calls since Sunday's tragedy denouncing hazardous conditions at night spots, theaters, supermarkets, schools, hospitals and shopping malls.

Outraged citizens in Santa Maria are demanding change.

Elise Parode, an 18-year-old student taking part in a protest before City Hall, chanted with all her might along with about 500 others, pushing up against the door of the building as municipal guards kept them from entering.

"We want justice! We want the government held accountable, just like the owners of the bar!" she yelled as the crowd around held aloft poster-size photos of the fire's victims. "Our own government doesn't know the laws ? we're not safe until they do."

Walk or Run: Are We Built To Be Lazy?

If you get in shape, you become more prone to bouncing around and spending more energy. The better you are in shape, the more you'd prefer to run than walk. Problem is, if you're booking it everywhere you go, you turn everyone's heads and they glare at you. Spring may come earlier to North American forests, increasing uptake of carbon dioxide

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Trees in the con?ti?nen?tal U.S. could send out new spring leaves up to 17 days ear?lier in the com?ing cen?tury than they did before global tem?per?a?tures started to rise, accord?ing to a new study by Prince?ton Uni?ver?sity researchers. These climate-driven changes could lead to changes in the com?po?si?tion of north?east?ern forests and give a boost to their abil?ity to take up car?bon dioxide.

Trees play an impor?tant role in tak?ing up car?bon diox?ide from the atmos?phere, so researchers led by David Med?vigy, assis?tant pro?fes?sor in Princeton's depart?ment of geo?sciences, wanted to eval?u?ate pre?dic?tions of spring bud?burst -- when decid?u?ous trees push out new growth after months of win?ter dor?mancy -- from mod?els that pre?dict how car?bon emis?sions will impact global temperatures.

The date of bud?burst affects how much car?bon diox?ide is taken up each year, yet most cli?mate mod?els have used overly sim?plis?tic schemes for rep?re?sent?ing spring bud?burst, mod?el?ing for exam?ple a sin?gle species of tree to rep?re?sent all the trees in a geo?graphic region.

In 2012, the Prince?ton team pub?lished a new model that relied on warm?ing tem?per?a?tures and the wan?ing num?ber of cold days to pre?dict spring bud?burst. The model, which was pub?lished in the Jour?nal of Geo?phys?i?cal Research, proved accu?rate when com?pared to data on actual bud?burst in the north?east?ern United States.

In the cur?rent paper pub?lished online in Geo?phys?i?cal Research Let?ters, Med?vigy and his col?leagues tested the model against a broader set of obser?va?tions col?lected by the USA National Phe?nol?ogy Net?work, a nation-wide tree ecol?ogy mon?i?tor?ing net?work con?sist?ing of fed?eral agen?cies, edu?ca?tional insti?tu?tions and cit?i?zen sci?en?tists. The team incor?po?rated the 2012 model into pre?dic?tions of future bud?burst based on four pos?si?ble cli?mate sce?nar?ios used in plan?ning exer?cises by the Inter?gov?ern?men?tal Panel on Cli?mate Change.

The researchers included Su-Jong Jeong, a post?doc?toral research asso?ciate in Geo?sciences, along with Elena Shevli?akova, a senior cli?mate mod?eler, and Sergey Maly?shev, a pro?fes?sional spe?cial?ist, both in the Depart?ment of Ecol?ogy and Evo?lu?tion?ary Biol?ogy and asso?ci?ated with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmos?pheric Administration's Geo?phys?i?cal Fluid Dynam?ics Laboratory.

The team esti?mated that, com?pared to the late 20th cen?tury, red maple bud?burst will occur 8 to 40 days ear?lier, depend?ing on the part of the coun?try, by the year 2100. They found that the north?ern parts of the United States will have more pro?nounced changes than the south?ern parts, with the largest changes occur?ring in Maine, New York, Michi?gan, and Wisconsin.

The researchers also eval?u?ated how warm?ing tem?per?a?tures could affect the bud?burst date of dif?fer?ent species of tree. They found that bud?burst shifted to ear?lier in the year in both early-budding trees such as com?mon aspen (Pop?u?lus tremu?loides) and late-budding trees such as red maple (Acer rubrum), but that the effect was greater in the late-budding trees and that over time the dif?fer?ences in bud?ding dates narrowed.

The researchers noted that early bud?burst may give decid?u?ous trees, such as oaks and maples, a com?pet?i?tive advan?tage over ever?green trees such as pines and hem?locks. With decid?u?ous trees grow?ing for longer peri?ods of the year, they may begin to out?strip growth of ever?greens, lead?ing to last?ing changes in for?est make-up.

The researchers fur?ther pre?dicted that warm?ing will trig?ger a speed-up of the spring "green?wave," or bud?burst that moves from south to north across the con?ti?nent dur?ing the spring.

The find?ing is also inter?est?ing from the stand?point of future changes in spring?time weather, said Med?vigy, because bud?burst causes an abrupt change in how quickly energy, water and pol?lu?tants are exchanged between the land and the atmos?phere. Once the leaves come out, energy from the sun is increas?ingly used to evap?o?rate water from the leaves rather than to heat up the sur?face. This can lead to changes in daily tem?per?a?ture ranges, sur?face humid?ity, stream?flow, and even nutri?ent loss from ecosys?tems, accord?ing to Medvigy.

Israel a no-show at its UN rights review

GENEVA (AP) ? Israel is a no-show as the top U.N. human rights body reviews its record ? the first time that a nation has done that without giving a reason.

At its meeting Tuesday in Geneva, the U.N. Human Rights Council waited for Israel to appear for its once-every-four-years rights review, then determined it had not.

Council spokesman Rolando Gomez told The Associated Press "we're in new territory here" with the unprecedented absence without a reason ? once before Haiti didn't appear, but it gave a reason.

U.S. diplomats have said the council is too focused on Israel, though all U.N. member nations are required to submit to such a review.

Israel said last year it would stop cooperating with the council because of an international fact-finding mission into Israeli settlements.

Endangered baby pygmy elephant found clinging to dead mother

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) ? Ten endangered Borneo pygmy elephants have been found dead in a Malaysian forest under mysterious circumstances, and wildlife officials said Tuesday that they probably were poisoned.

Carcasses of the baby-faced elephants were found near each other over the past three weeks at the Gunung Rara Forest Reserve, said Laurentius Ambu, director of the wildlife department in Malaysia's Sabah state on Borneo island.

In one case, officers rescued a 3-month-old calf that was trying to wake its dead mother.

Poisoning appeared to be the likely cause, but officials have not determined whether it was intentional, said Sabah environmental minister Masidi Manjun. Though some elephants have been killed for their tusks on Sabah in past years, there was no sign that these animals had been poached.

"This is a very sad day for conservation and Sabah. The death of these majestic and severely endangered Bornean elephants is a great loss to the state," Masidi said in a statement. "If indeed these poor elephants were maliciously poisoned, I would personally make sure that the culprits would be brought to justice and pay for their crime."

The WWF wildlife group estimates that fewer than 1,500 Borneo pygmy elephants exist. They live mainly in Sabah and grow to about eight feet tall, a foot or two shorter than mainland Asian elephants. Known for their babyish faces, large ears and long tails, pygmy elephants were found to be a distinct subspecies only in 2003, after DNA testing.

Their numbers have stabilized in recent years amid conservation efforts to protect their jungle habitats from being torn down for plantations and development projects.

The elephants found dead this month were believed to be from the same family group and ranged in age from 4 to 20 years, said Sen Nathan, the wildlife department's senior veterinarian. Seven were female and three were male, he said.

Post-mortems showed they suffered severe hemorrhages and ulcers in their gastrointestinal tracts. None had gunshot injuries.

"We highly suspect that it might be some form of acute poisoning from something that they had eaten, but we are still waiting for the laboratory results," Nathan said.

FIFA warns Brazil against delays in WCup prep

By Anthony Boadle

updated 6:18 p.m. ET Jan. 28, 2013

BRASILIA (Reuters) - With just 500 days to go until the 2014 World Cup kicks off in Brazil, soccer's world governing body FIFA warned that the hosts cannot afford any further delays in getting their venues ready.

The global soccer tournament, followed by the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro two years later, will test Brazil's aspiration to become a developed nation. But delays in building stadiums and preparing hotels and airports to receive more than half a million soccer fans could turn the event into an embarrassment.

In June Brazil will host the eight-nation Confederations Cup, a dress rehearsal for the World Cup.

FIFA has twice agreed to push back the handover deadline of four of the six stadiums to be used in the Confederations Cup and FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke warned on Monday that there will be no further extension beyond the April 15 delivery date.

"We cannot go beyond this date. There cannot be any further delays. All the stadiums must be ready by then," Valcke said after inspecting work on the new Man? Garrincha stadium in Brasilia, where Japan play Brazil on June 15 in the opening game of the Confederations Cup.

Despite the warning, the giant Maracana stadium which will host the finals of both the Confederations Cup and the World Cup will not meet FIFA's deadline as its owner, the state government of Rio, has already said it will not be ready until the end of May.

The Man? Garrincha stadium in Brasilia is 87 percent complete and builders are working round the clock to erect steel trestles that will hold up the roof covering 70,000 seats at the second largest of the 12 stadiums to be used in the World Cup.

Even at completed venues there is still work to be done.

Valcke could not make any calls on his cell phone at the Arena Castelao in the northern city of Fortaleza, where the first of Brazil's 2014 World Cup stadiums to be ready held its first matches on Sunday.

The FIFA official signed an agreement with Brazil's communications ministry on Monday committing Brazil to add cell phone antennas and other communication systems around the 12 World Cup stadiums.

"There will be a 4G level of communication all around the country," Valcke told reporters, before leaving Brasilia for Salvador, where the Fonte Nova stadium is 90 percent complete.

There are still concerns about the Recife stadium, which is 83.6 percent complete according to contractor Odebrecht, and the Maracana is only 80 percent ready and the furthest behind schedule.

Maracana should have reopened in February after its $450 million renovation but delays have forced a postponement.

Venue of the 1950 World Cup final, in which Uruguay upset hosts Brazil in an unforgettable decider, Maracana was once the world's largest stadium packing crowds of up to 200,000 people.

The upgraded stadium, with a reduced capacity of 76,000 spectators, is due to reopen on June 2 with a friendly between Brazil and England.

A nightclub fire that killed 231 people in southern Brazil on Sunday raised security concerns in Brazilian sporting venues but Valcke rejected any connection to soccer.

"It has nothing to do with football, nothing to do with stadiums," he said. FIFA and Brazil will train security staff to make sure venues can be evacuated "in less than a few minutes," Valcke said.

Jennifer Nagy: The Seven-Year Itch: Fact or Fiction?

We've all heard of the seven-year itch. Since a popular movie by the same name was released in 1955, the concept of the seven-year itch has been a widely accepted phenomenon. It is based on the belief that many couples start to get antsy and lose interest in their significant others around the seven-year mark.

There's no consensus among experts as to why the seven-year itch may occur. Perhaps it's a matter of timing: after seven years, some couples will have successfully raised one or two children through the trying infant years, only to realize that they don't really want to be together any longer. Or by the seven year mark, some couples may have spent enough time together that the relationship is no longer exciting and all of those pesky habits and traits that were tolerable through the first few years of the relationship are now like nails on a chalkboard (a.k.a. intolerable).

Other theories suggest that our bodies and minds develop and change every seven years. Austrian philosopher and teacher Rudolf Steiner created a theory of human development based on seven-year cycles that were associated with astrology. According to his theories, humans experience changes physically and mentally every seven years. It makes some sense that if we experience large changes in personal growth, experience, knowledge and goals every seven years, that these changes will make a marriage less stable and increase the probability of divorce.

But the seven-year itch is certainly not a proven phenomenon. Most experts have simply have agreed to disagree.

Four- & Seven-Year Itch?
A 1999 study undertaken by Dr. Larry A. Kurdek, a psychology professor from Wright State University demonstrated the validity of both a four- and seven-year itch. The study showed that "couples often began their unions with high levels of marital quality, but that it appeared to decrease twice: once rather steeply over the first four years and again after about seven". His study also showed that couples with children experienced a more rapid decline in the quality of their marriage.

Twelve-Year Itch?
In 2010, a study showed that "the majority of couples who divorce have now spent more than a decade together before going their separate ways". The study, which was conducted by the Grant Thornton accountancy group, utilized information from a survey of 90 law firms and concluded that marriages are most likely to fail after about twelve years.

Three-Year Itch?
Finally, a 2012 study done by parenting website Netmums seemingly refuted all of the previously established "facts." The study showed that couples with young children are "four and a half times more likely to split after three years than the traditional seven years". Of the 1,500 respondents, 42 percent said that having a child had driven them apart. Siobhan Freegard, founder of Netmums, also attributes this "itch" shift to the fact that more couples are getting married later in life, but earlier in their relationships. Women may be reacting to their ticking biological clocks and rushing into marriages and children, rather than spending more time dating and getting to know their spouses to be.

What does this mean for couples? Does the the divorce "itch" come at three, four, seven or twelve years?

In my opinion, the ever-changing conclusions indicate that there is no magic number. The studies do seem to agree that couples need to put in the extra effort every day in order to sustain happy marriages. If a couple doesn't prioritize their relationship, their marriage will fall by the wayside -- no matter how long they've been together.

Climate change projected to alter Indiana bat maternity range

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Research by U.S. Forest Service scientists forecasts profound changes over the next 50 years in the summer range of the endangered Indiana bat. In an article published in the journal Ecology and Evolution, Forest Service Southern Research Station researchers Susan Loeb and Eric Winters discuss the findings of one of the first studies designed to forecast the responses of a temperate zone bat species to climate change.

The researchers modeled the current maternity distribution of Indiana bats and then modeled future distributions based on four different climate change scenarios. "We found that due to projected changes in temperature, the most suitable summer range for Indiana bats would decline and become concentrated in the northeastern United States and the Appalachian Mountains," says SRS research ecologist Loeb. "The western part of the range (Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio) -- currently considered the heart of Indiana bat maternity range -- would become unsuitable under most climates that we modeled. This has important implications for managers in the Northeast and the Appalachian Mountains as these areas will most likely serve as climatic refuges for these animals when other parts of the range become too warm."

In general, bat species in temperate zones such as Indiana bats may be more sensitive than many other groups of mammals to climate change because their reproductive cycles, hibernation patterns, and migration are closely tied to temperature. Indiana bat populations were in decline for decades due to multiple factors, including the destruction of winter hibernation sites and loss of summer maternity habitat.

Due to conservation efforts, researchers saw an increase in Indiana bat populations in 2000 to 2005, but with the onset of white-nose syndrome populations are declining again, with the number of Indiana bats reported hibernating in the northeastern United States down by 72 percent in 2011. The study predicts even more declines due to temperature rises from climate change, with much of the western portion of the current range forecast to be unsuitable for maternity habitat by 2060.

"Our model suggests that once average summer (May through August) maximum temperatures reach 27.4?C (81.3?F), the climatic suitability of the area for Indiana bat maternity colonies declines," says Loeb. "Once they reach 29.9?C (85.8?F), the area is forecast to become completely unsuitable. Initially, Indiana bat maternity colonies may respond to warming temperatures by choosing roosts that have more shade than the roosts that they currently use. Eventually, it is likely that they will have to find more suitable climates."

The models the researchers produced provide resource managers guidance on areas that are likely to contain maternity colonies now and in the future, depending on the availability of suitable habitat in those areas. "Managers in the western parts of the range should be aware of the potential changes in summer distributions due to climate change and not assume that declines are due to habitat loss or degradation," says Loeb. "Management actions that foster high reproductive success and survival will be critical for the conservation and recovery of the species."

For Super Bowl ads, it's go viral or go home

16 hrs.

Call them super leaks, super teasers or super previews. But for a growing number of Super Bowl advertisers, they are super smart business.

For years, Super Bowl commercials were closely guarded secrets until they aired on the biggest ratings day of the year. These days, companies have discovered that teasing them online in advance of the big day is a more efficient way of getting their brand message in front of the masses.

CBS, which will broadcast Super Bowl XLVII on?Feb. 3, sold 30-second ad slots for up to $4 million, so it?s no wonder advertisers try to squeeze every drop of value out of their investment.

"We are seeing more teasers because they have been effective," said?Steve Posavac, professor of marketing at Vanderbilt University. "This year, many advertisers feel that if they don?t release a teaser, they will fail to gain consumers? mindshare, and that their ads will be lost in the clutter."

Mercedes-Benz roared out of the starting line first last week, with its spot featuring Kate Upton. Strutting in daisy dukes and a low cut tank top, the striking supermodel blows suds in slow motion at a group of guys as they wash her Benz and ogle her frame, mouths agape.

Though it shows less skin than a standard shampoo commercial -- and seems demure in comparison to?Upton's past backseat turn for Carl's Jr.?last year ? it has already drummed up plenty of buzz. As of Friday night, the teaser racked has up more than 4.6 million YouTube views.

That?s right, more than a week before the San Francisco 49ers face the Baltimore Ravens, Mercedes-Benz?s ad is already a success. And, thanks to the Parents? Television Council, we have the first Super Bowl controversy.

"This ad [reinforces] for millions of wives, daughters and sisters across the country that you use your sex appeal to get what you want," a Parents' Television Council spokesperson told the Daily Mail, complaining that the ad "isn't selling cars, it?s selling sexual objectification."

The sound bite provided global media outlets (ours included) the perfect news hook. In the following days, the ad has been discussed, analyzed, and played over and over again, at no cost to the Mercedes. Talk about return on investment!

The luxury German automaker isn?t the only player in this game. Coca-Cola, Sketchers, Wonderful Pistachios (with 'Gagngam Style' superstar Psy) and MiO (with Tracy Morgan) have released previews.

Coke is also making a huge social media play with its "Mirage" campaign. In it, three quirky character-driven groups -- show girls, badlanders, and cowboys -- race across an African desert to be the first to reach the thirst-quenching Coca-Cola oasis. A preview spot is circulating online encouraging viewers to vote online to determine which group ends up winning in the final spot. Online surfers can either vote by "old-fashioned" online button clicking, or vote-casting with the Twitter hashtags #CokeCowboys, #CokeShowgirls and #CokeBadlanders.

The beverage giant?s advertising company has also cooked up animated gifs, "sabotage videos" and other content ready-made for Tweeting, Tumbling, Instagramming, and Facebooking.?

Indeed,?Coke?has come a long way from Mean Joe Greene?s jersey toss in Coke?s legendary commercial 34 years ago.

The reason for the big social push is simple: More shares equal more views, which equals more brand exposure.

"Without a social media component, a Super Bowl ad is worthless," said?David Johnson, CEO of public relations agency Strategic Vision.

Social has risen and advertisers are rising to meet it.

"Three quarters of the audience will be on a 'second screen' during the Super Bowl,? said Ankarino Lara, chief product officer for Thismoment, which builds branded online content distribution software. "The biggest brands recognize the audience shift and plan mobile and on live elements in their campaigns."

According to data by the Unruly Viral Video Chart, the "Billboard 100 of viral videos," 75 percent of the top 20 most-shared ads from Super Bowl 2012 went up online before game day;? 55 percent of sharing happened after March 1, 2012; and total Super Bowl ads shares increased by 129 percent from 2011 to 2012.

Audi is taking a similar "choose your own adventure" approach as Coke's. On Thursday night, it posted the beginning of its ad, showing a kid driving to his high school prom dateless but in his dad's new 2013 Audi S6 high-performance sports sedan. The German automaker also uploaded three versions of the ending, giving viewers 24 hours to vote on which one will make the final cut.

Other companies are also hopping on the social bandwagon:?

  • Doritos has reprised its annual "Crash the Super Bowl" contest, allowing a fan-made commercial to air during the game.?
  • Lincoln has teamed up with Jimmy Fallon to let fans write the script for its commercial on Twitter with the hashtag #Steerthescript.?
  • Pepsi, Pizza Hut and Toyota will include fan-submitted photos in a commercial.?
  • VW is promoting the #GetHappy hashtag.

Advertisers still have plenty of tricks up their sleeves, though, and some are deliberately taking an "anti-leak" strategy that still has an eye on Twitter impact.

"Some advertisers are holding back ads for a 'surprise' factor and for the instant chatter that will take place on social media during the game," said Katherine Wintsch, founder of The Mom Complex, an Interpublic Group of Companies unit focused on marketing to mothers.

Brands still place a premium on using the Super Bowl as the ultimate stage for product debuts; Anheuser-Busch is going to debut two new drinks at the game: Budweiser Black Crown and Beck's Sapphire.

"I don?t know what it is, but everyone finds humor in dog ads or baby ads," John Yorke, President of creative firm Rain 43, said. "Last year, we saw lots of both ? and the highest rated ads came from these categories ? so if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it ? expect to see more of this trend."?

16 die in Egypt riot after soccer violence verdict

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian court sentenced 21 people to death Saturday on charges related to one of the world's deadliest incidents of soccer violence, touching off an attempted jailbreak and a riot that killed 16 in the Mediterranean port city that is home to most of the defendants.

The verdict follows deadly clashes between police and demonstrators on Friday, the second anniversary of the uprising that overthrew longtime leader Hosni Mubarak. Such cycles of violence, often lasting for weeks and costing dozens of lives, have occurred regularly over the past two years.

Die-hard soccer fans from both teams, known as Ultras, hold the police at least partially responsible for the Port Said deaths and criticize Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi for doing little to reform the force.

Al-Ahly Ultras in particular have been at the forefront of protests. But anger also is boiling in Port Said, where residents say they have been unfairly scapegoated.

Immediately after the verdict, two police were shot dead outside Port Said's main prison when angry relatives tried to storm the facility to free the defendants. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, as well as live rounds, at the crowd outside the prison, killing 14, security officials said. Hundreds were wounded. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Security officials said the military is being deployed to Port Said ? the second such deployment in less than 24 hours. The army was widely used to keep order by top generals who took over after Mubarak, but the military has kept a much lower profile since Morsi was elected as president in June.

Morsi cancelled a scheduled trip to Ethiopia Saturday and instead met for the first time with top generals as part of the newly-formed National Defense Council.

The military was also deployed overnight in the city of Suez after eight people died in clashes between security forces and protesters opposed to Morsi. Another protester was killed in Ismailiya, and security officials told the state news agency MENA that two policemen were killed in Friday's protests, bringing the death toll on the second anniversary of Egypt's uprising to 11.

Judge Sobhi Abdel-Maguid read out the death sentences related to the Feb. 1 riot in Port Said that killed 74 fans of the Cairo-based Al-Ahly team. Defendants' lawyers said all those sentenced were fans of the Port Said team, Al-Masry. Executions in Egypt are usually carried out by hanging.

The judge Saturday said in his statement read live on state TV that he would announce the verdict for the remaining 52 defendants on March 9.

Among those on trial are nine security officials, but none were handed sentences Saturday, lawyers and security officials say.

Fans of al-Ahly, whose stands were attacked by rival club Al-Masry in the Feb. 1 incident in Port Said, had promised more violence if the accused did not receive death sentences. In the days leading up to the verdict, Al-Ahly fans warned of bloodshed and "retribution". Hundreds of Al-Ahly fans gathered outside the Cairo sports club in anticipation of the verdict, chanting against the police and the government.

Before the judge could read out the names of the 21, families erupted in screams of "Allahu Akbar!" Arabic for God is great, with their hands in the air and waving pictures of the deceased. One man fainted while others hugged one another. The judge smacked the bench several times to try and contain reaction in the courtroom.

"This was necessary," said Nour al-Sabah, whose 17 year-old son Ahmed Zakaria died in the melee. "Now I want to see the guys when they are executed with my own eyes, just as they saw the murder of my son."

The verdict is not expected to calm tensions between the two rival teams. The judge is expected to make public his reasons for the death sentences March 9, when the remaining 52 defendants receive their sentences.

A Port Said resident and lawyer of one of the defendants given a death sentence said the verdict was nothing more than "a political decision to calm the public."

"There is nothing to say these people did anything and we don't understand what this verdict is based on," Mohammed al-Daw told The Associated Press by telephone.

"Our situation in Port Said is very grave because kids were taken from their homes for wearing green T-shirts," he said, referring to the Al-Masry team color.

The violence began after the Port Said's home team won the match, 3-1. Al-Masry fans stormed the pitch after the game ended, attacking Cairo's Al-Ahly fans.

Authorities shut off the stadium lights, plunging it into darkness. In the exit corridor, the fleeing crowd pressed against a chained gate until it broke open. Many were crushed under the crowd of people trying to flee.

Survivors of the riot described a nightmarish scene in the stadium. Police stood by doing nothing, they said, as fans of Al-Masry attacked supporters of the top Cairo club stabbing them and throwing them off bleachers.

Al-Ahly survivors said supporters of Al-Masry carved the words "Port Said" into their bodies and undressed them while beating them with iron bars.

While there has long been bad blood between the two rival teams, many blamed police for failing to perform usual searches for weapons at the stadium.

Both Al-Ahly Ultras and Al-Masry Ultras widely believe that ex-members of the ousted regime of Hosni Mubarak helped instigate the attack, and that the police at the very least were responsible for gross negligence. It is not clear what kind of evidence, if any, was presented to the court to back up claims that the attack had been orchestrated by regime officials.

"The police are thugs!" yelled relatives of the deceased inside the courtroom before the judge took the bench.

As is customary in Egypt, the death sentences will be sent to the nation's top religious authority, the Grand Mufti, for approval, though the court has final say on the matter.

All of the defendants ? who were not present in the courtroom Saturday for security reasons ? have the right to appeal the verdict.

The melee was the world's deadliest soccer violence in 15 years.

The Ultras are proud of their hatred for the police, who were the backbone of Mubarak's authoritarian rule. They then then directed their chants against the military rulers who took over after Mubarak's ouster.

Ultras from several Egyptian sports clubs were engaged in deadly clashes with police near the Interior Ministry headquarters in Cairo that killed 42 people less than three months before the soccer melee in Port Said.

Why You Need Car Insurance | INWD

There are more drivers hitting the road every year. As this number goes up, the chances of a car wreck will also increase. If you get in a car crash, the auto insurance you own can make a big difference in how much you have to pay. But why do you need insurance and just how much do you need? Auto insurance provides you with protection from paying for damage or injury you cause others while you are driving, damage to your vehicle or personal injury or injury to your passengers from a crash, plus certain other incidents, such as theft. No matter where you live, you will need to purchase some variety of auto insurance. Deciding to drive without insurance could mean you have to repair or replace a stolen or damaged vehicle or pay the cost of any damage for which you might be responsible. Liability: It pays for the expenses you have caused to others in a car accident, including injury and property damage. If you are sued, it also pays your legal fees. Recommended, more comprehensive levels of liability insurance can be purchased that cover more than the lower, state-mandated insurance. Personal Injury Protection: Personal injury insurance is required in some states and is optional in others. Sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage, this pays the medical treatment for you or your passengers regardless of who was at fault. This insurance can also pay for lost earnings, service replacement and funeral expenses. The minimum amount of personal injury protection is typically set by the state. Medical Payments: This coverage is available in states that are not considered no-fault; it will pay despite who may have been at fault. This insurance will pay for all insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical or funeral expenses for bodily injury from a crash. Collision: This pays for damage to your vehicle caused by an accident. Comprehensive: Cover your vehicle from all non-collision damages when you buy this type of coverage. This may include protection from theft, vandalism, and fire or flood damage. Uninsured Motorist: This pays for repair and replacement costs when someone with insurance is injured in an accident caused by another person who does not have liability coverage. Under-Insured Motorist: There are other drivers who have liability insurance that might not be able to pay for all the expenses they are responsible for. Under-insured motorist coverage protects you in accidents involving those drivers. Other types of coverage, such as emergency road service, are also available. What you pay for auto insurance varies based on the company and will depend on multiple factors, such as: *Your selected coverage *Your vehicle?s make and model * Whether or not you have been in an accident * Your age, sex and marital status * Where you live Some people think they can get by without auto insurance, but it is honestly something you don?t want to live without. Evaluate your needs, research your options, and with the guidance of your insurance agency, choose the option that best suits you. Auto insurance Oakland

Friar accused of abuse in 2 states kills self

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? A Franciscan friar accused of sexually abusing students at Catholic high schools in Ohio and Pennsylvania killed himself at a western Pennsylvania monastery, police said Saturday.

Brother Stephen Baker, 62, was found dead of self-inflicted wounds at the St. Bernardine Monastery in Hollidaysburg on Saturday morning, Blair Township Police Chief Roger White told the Associated Press. He declined to specify the type of wounds or say whether a note was found.

Baker was named in legal settlements last week involving 11 men who alleged that he sexually abused them at a Catholic high school in northeast Ohio three decades ago. The undisclosed financial settlements announced Jan. 16 involved his contact with students at John F. Kennedy High School in Warren, Ohio from 1986-90.

The Youngstown diocese previously said it was unaware of the allegations until nearly 20 years after the alleged abuse.

"Let us continue to pray for all victims of abuse, for Brother Baker's family and the repose of his soul," Youngstown Bishop George Murray said in a statement Saturday.

After the settlements were announced, the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese in central Pennsylvania said it received complaints in 2011 of possible abuse by Baker at Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Bishop McCort High School hired an attorney to investigate after several former students alleged they were molested by Baker in the 1990s. Attorney Susan Williams said three former students had talked to her in detail about the alleged abuse.

Baker taught and coached at John F. Kennedy High School in the late 1980's and early 1990's and was at Bishop McCort from 1992-2000.

Bishop Mark Bartchak of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese said in a statement that he was saddened by the news of Baker's death, but declined further comment citing pending legal action involving the diocese.

A message left for Father Patrick Quinn, the head of Baker's order, the Third Order Regular Franciscans, was not immediately returned.

Judy Jones, assistant Midwest director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said the organization still hopes people who know about other abuse allegations against Baker will continue to come forward.

"We feel sad for Br. Baker's family but even sadder for the dozens of boys who Baker assaulted," she said in a statement.

Stepparenting & Blended Families

Becoming a stepmother is a life-altering event in any woman's life. The issues are extraordinarily complex and women are overwhelmingly unprepared. Yet concerns usually focus on the effect remarriage has on the children. The Enlightened Stepmother approaches the subject from a totally new perspective -- that of the stepmother. Based on information -- sometimes controversial -- from stepmoms of all ages, occupations and lifestyles, who know from experience what works, what doesn't and why --

  • What you need to know about your new family before you become part of it.
  • How to get off to the right start. (It's hard to change a relationship once you've taken the path of least resistance.)
  • How to prevent, rather than cure, the stepmom's classic pitfalls.
  • What you need to recognize about your relationship with your husband's children.
  • How to handle relationships between your kids and his.
  • Why you need to give your marriage top priority.
  • How to make sure others are aware that this is your life too.
  • Why you need to develop a working relationship with your stepchildren's mother.
  • How to understand the inevitable stages every stepfamily passes through.
  • How to overcome the guilt of not loving -- or even liking -- your stepchildren.
  • How to avoid feeling guilty in circumstances over which you have no control.
  • Why a successful stepfamily is as unique as every stepmom.
