Washington D.C. Forecast: Potential for heavy rain

Humidity will rise tonight and the chance for showers and storms returns Thursday.

Tonight:
Increasing Clouds
Lows: 55-63
Wind: SE 4-8 m.p.h.
Thursday:
Mostly Cloudy, PM T-Showers Possible
Highs: Near 80
Wind: SE 10 m.p.h.
Friday:
Showers and T-Storms Likely
Highs: Near 80
Precipitation: 1"+ Possible

Showers and storms are back in the forecast but how much rain can we expect and will it depart by the weekend?

As the center of an area of high pressure moves off the New England coast, our local weather conditions will start to deteriorate. It will become cloudy and more humid tomorrow and scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible. On Friday and Saturday, an elongated area of low pressure (a trough) will approach from the west. At the same time, a substantial channel of tropical moisture will stream northward from Florida and The Gulf of Mexico.

An area of low pressure may act as the focal point of the heaviest rainfall. This event is still in the realm of ?possibility? not quite yet to the level of ?probability?. And we are still not certain where?in the region the heaviest rain may fall. There may wind up being a very sharp gradient in the rainfall in areas just west of D.C. compared to those areas just east of D.C. We will know more over the next 24 hours but for now?expect moderate to heavy rain to develop on Friday in spots and continue into Sunday. As always, when it comes to looking ahead to weekend forecasts that mention rain, I like to point out that I have been wrong before and maybe I will be this time. We?ll see.
